League1 Ontario has had two former players called up by Canada for the upcoming FIFA U-17 World Cup in Indonesia.

Erik Pop was the top scorer for ProStars in the 2022 Men’s U19 Reserve Division, netting 13 times to help fire his side into the playoffs. He then joined the U19 side of Karlsruher SC – whose first team plays in the second tier of professional football in Germany, 2. Bundesliga.

He will be joined in the group of forwards by Kevaughn Tavernier, who played for Sigma in the 2023 Men’s Premier Division before stepping up to Forge FC’s ranks and making his professional debut in their championship-winning Canadian Premier League season.

Both players were initially called up to the week-long preparation camp before the team travelled out to Indonesia. Tavernier was also previously selected for CANM17’s international series in Brazil in September, alongside full-back Allen Saye Blegay who won the Men’s Premier Division with Simcoe County Rovers this year.

Canada’s first game in the World Cup is against Spain on Friday, November 10, in a group that also includes Uzbekistan and Mali. Good luck to all the players involved.
